Eureka Rising: Multiple Perspectives

For the Eureka 150th celebrations, Culture Lab International and Grainery Lane Theatre will create an exhibition and three cooperative performances (or Art Co-opera's) in an event called "Eureka Rising". In preparation, working principles include exploring multiple perspectives and using the multiple intelligences- or many modes of creative expression. Culture Lab International would like to announce an open call for artists, performers, researchers, and schools to participate in its "Eureka Rising" cooperative performances and exhibition. Culture Lab is a cultural research/theatre laboratory. The Art Co-operas are being facilitated by Willem Brugman, who has directing and performance experience in Europe, New York, and Australia. The workshops commence from September onwards and the exhibition and performances will be between November 26th and December 5th.

Firstly there are the forces that brought about the Eureka event. They where not simply confined to the local area. The actions that took place that day held a national significance that tapped into the "spirit of Australian democracy". The poverty and the hope of a better life to come spurred the digger's to face the abuse of power as well as endure rough injustice and repression to the point of rebellion. In essence this is the "spirit of Australian democracy". In the spirit of this, Eureka Rising will be a national celebration, not just of the event itself, but also that "spirit of Australian Democracy".

For a second point, we will examine the social-dynamics of the Eureka event in a post-modern light. It is hard to believe these dynamics have disappeared from our society when we take a look at the current debates about the falling industrial borders and divisions between nations (globalization), the possibility of a "Free Trade" agreement with the United States, relationships spanning cultural boundaries on both an individual and community level, and the increasing numbers of impoverished and homeless in Victoria. This brings about a second aspect to the Eureka event. That of Eureka Rising as an opportunity to expand our awareness of the economic and social condition of our nation.

For a third, we will explore the "Eureka within" using a series of three archetypes (the psychic patterns we reflect back on the world and that limit our ability to represent the complexity of society) that showed themselves strongly through the Eureka event- that of the "gold digger"- a soul searching for a place in the world represented through wealth; the "judge"- the individual corrupted by power; and the "rebel"- the person driven to the threshold of adventure by forces they cannot control.

Fourthly, we would like to introduce Eureka Rising as a learning opportunity focused on a multitude of individual and group perspectives surrounding the event. In doing this w would like to work creatively with concepts such as dissent, injustices, and Ballarat as a "learning city".
