20 November 2004

$600 to get into a Democracy Conference! Can't something be done?

Six-hundred dollars to get in the door of a Democracy conference? Holy budget-busters, Batman! With a price tag that excludes most of the community from entering, we started to wonder if this is a celebration of the Eureka and Rebel Spirits or the high-rollers room at Crown? We thought this sky-high price-tag was a bit over the top, so a few of us have got together to do our own thing- an Alternative Democracy Event.

This will be a democracy conference that is sure to examine, test and act within the processes of Democracy!

The Alternative Democracy Open Forums:

25-26-27 November 4 pm to 8 pm
At Grainery Lane Theatre

Open Microphone- Challenging Minds, - Passionate Voices, Loving Hearts.

Beyond alienation and dis-enfranchisement in reaction to the high cost of attending the Eureka 150 Democracy Conference thes low cost events have a life of their own - a space for concerns and analyses not taken on fully or "being stamped out" by dominating cultures ISSUES: more than Structural creation of poverty, suppression of dissent, destruction of nature and the dangers of "anything goes" capitalism.

Hosted by Culture Lab

History snaps:
In 1854 500 working Australians swore "by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties."

Frank Castle, a fictional character, stated "sometimes the law is inadequate and one must shame its inadequacy by pursuing a natural form".

Dr Joseph Toscano, a noted political critic, claims that "If we don't reclaim the radical spirit, the 150th anniversary celebrations could degenerate into a soulless exercise that marks the event but doesn't acknowledge the radical spirit behind the rebellion".
