John BrisbinMember since 20 July 2002. Outlandishly abstracted dreamthinker and organisational systems swirler.
I came to Culture Lab with a background in media technology and an ongoing interest in complex systems, holographic metaphors, and applied social research. CultureLab Experiences Visions TransformationsMy experience of the strange attractor pull of CultureLab was initiated by Garry Richards, grounded in a mad video project for the organics veggie run in the company of philosophical film-maker Gary Caganoff, and consummated with my first encounter with white facepaint some 6 weeks later. Whew. I found that the transformations continued daily through living practice. I'm supported in a conscious commitment to exploring the communal and collaborative, and feeling the pull of my own yearning for deeper self-knowing. It was a challenge. Personal ContextWinding into the murky bits of my own identities, I have discovered a number of constant themes, or groundtones, that weave my experiences together into a sort of consistency. It occurred to me early in 2003 that I could actually have a go at writing these themes down where other people could see them. And here is where my connection with the Lab is most clarified . . . we are walking the same paths. CONTEXTS: WHERE I FIND MY HOPE A Life-positive place I live as if humans are a specific manifestation of a broader tendency toward system formation, complexification, and transformation: that tendency is what we commonly refer to as "life". My context is that I consciously engage with and support this tendency. A Human-positive face I speak from a desire to support the continuation of the human experience. This desire does not depend on a static concept or tightly bounded definition of "human", but incorporates instead support for the continued evolutionary journey of the generalised notion of our species. A Generative grace Through the acceptance of these positive biases, I have a personal capacity to discover and collaborate socially. By doing so, I contribute to the generation of temporary, localised conditions supporting human/living-system persistence. OBJECTIVES: WHAT I AM SINGING INTO MY LIFE
Independent ProjectsI am actively stirring complexities in a number of independent directions, including: Australian Community Foods http://www.communityfoods.org.au/ Convenor and Conceptal Architect Self-regulating, geo-spatially enabled website for the promotion and maintenance of local food networks across Australia. The project allows people involved in alternative food chains (farmer's markets, food co-ops, subscription agriculture, etc) to locate emerging communities of interest through a spatial search and notification process. Powered by a combination of ingenuity and good-natured indulgence by Colin Atkinson and John Robens, and Naomi Staples. Big Medicine http://www.nancho.net/ Collaborator and guerilla memetics Assisting the astonishing W.David Kubiak, Rita, and Kathy in various aspects of optimistic future building. Especially concerned with the role of toxic super-organisms (corporations, etc) on the evolutionary potential of humans. Seed Savers Network http://www.seedsavers.net/ Organisational Consultant, Site Manager Primary advice, design and implementation for information management systems, co-publication solutions, and database assets. But mostly it's just a really good excuse to rap with the wickedly enthusiastic Michel and Jude Fanton, the legendary duo who tirelessly dance at the edge of chaos in the name of saving heritage germplasm for a healthier future. Jagran Jan Vikas Samiti http://www.jagranjan.org/ Consultant, Site Architecture Providing advice and technical implementation to major Indian NGO dealing with Traditional Health Systems and Integrated Rural Development. Delightful and dangerous work with the polydimensional Bhanwar and Ganesh (and so many more smiling, brilliant workers for humane change in the JJVS crewe) and the effervescent Rita of Big Medicine.
