Culture Camp: Snake Valley: It takes a whole village to raise a child
art village festival performance longhouse-collaboration (Project last updated 22 April 2003)Place in Space: Australia: VIC: Snake Valley
VisionCulture Camp is a multi-media festival of performance, poetry, workshops, sculpture and other cultural activities. Birthed at Snake Valley Farm, 20 minutes from Ballarat, Culture Camp is a collaborative initiative by Culture Lab International and Crazy Convoy Of Importance: a flexible vehicle for involving community/audience in creation and exploration of performance/art and culture from the ground up. Culture Camp is emerging as an annual festival at Snake Valley, as well as strengthening its capacity as a touring, nomadic village through the Australian landscape. Culture Camp is a collaborative experiment in art and culture, embracing the principles of Ahloha: to be kind, to be inclusive, to be agreeable, to be patient, to share breath and to share space. The first Culture Camp Snake Valley was held in January 2003 with the organising theme: It Takes A Whole Village To Raise a Child. The second Culture Camp in April 2003 gathered even more local artists and visitors with a Theatre Of synthesise Event at Grainary Lane: the values of the land cross-fertilising with the emancipation of the city as catalyst to sustainable human eco-cultural values. Culture Camp is not geographically bound and is soon to appear at The Aquarius Festival 30th anniversary as part of its seasonal nomadic wanderings through the Australian landscape.
RealisationCulture Camp opens for a week of Daily Life and Community: experimenting with and applying cultural group processes as a re-learning towards socio-centricity and the artist as participant in life, in community. The week of activities, workshops, theatre and art-making culminates in public performances at the Snake Valley Farm Camp/VIllage and also in nearby towns and cities: the camp/village coming through the town gates to make trade in the marketplace, sharing new found wonders and discoveries from of old and from of new. The next Culture Camp is set for November to coincide with The Big West Festival in Footscray. Workshops will be held in Grainary Lane, Ballarat and at Snake Valley Farm from - till -. With performances at grainary lane from - to - and at Big West at the - from - to - . People involvedCulture Lab: Catherine Hassall. John Brisbin. WIllem Brugman. Francoise Bocquet. Kirin.
